Hiring a Professional

Professional Musician - Violin Fusion plays wedding ceremony music at Wharfedale Grange Leeds

I stole this from a wedding industry colleague of mine, the amazing Lucy Wright . It really sums up why good professional musicians charge what they do.

Hiring a professional musician ……

CUSTOMER: How much will it cost for you to do a 2 hour set

MUSICIAN: I’ll do this for you for £350.

CUSTOMER: That’s WAY too expensive for that!!

MUSICIAN: How much do YOU think it would cost?

CUSTOMER: No more than £150 – MAX!! It’s great exposure!

MUSICIAN: I can’t prioritise my time for so little.

CUSTOMER: People in your line of work are so greedy.

MUSICIAN: Sorry you feel that way. Why not do it yourself?

CUSTOMER: But… but… I don’t know how to do any of this.

MUSICIAN: For £100, I’ll teach you EXACTLY how to get on stage and help you prepare for your first gig. – PLUS… you’ll get the knowledge and experience for the next time you want to do a job yourself. Saving you £50.

CUSTOMER: Deal!! Let’s do it.

MUSICIAN: To get started you’ll need the equipment. So you’ll have to buy an instrument, PA System, Mixing Desk, Microphone, Lighting, Insurance and a few other things.

CUSTOMER: But I don’t have all this equipment and I can’t buy all of these for one gig.

MUSICIAN: Well then for another £150 more I’ll let you rent my equipment…

CUSTOMER: That’s cutting into my savings. But I’ll rent your equipment.

MUSICIAN: Okay! I’ll be back on Saturday and we can get started.

CUSTOMER: Wait. I can’t on Saturday. I only have time today.

MUSICIAN: Sorry, I only give lessons on Saturday, because I have to prioritize my time and my equipment have to be at other gigs with other customers all week long.

CUSTOMER: Okay!! I’ll sacrifice my family plans on Saturday.

MUSICIAN: Yeah. me too. Oh… and I forgot… to do a gig yourself, you also have to pay for the tracks and petrol to get there. Everything is in high demand right now, so you might want to download your tracks tonight and prepare your set, also best bet is to get your van and load up at 6 AM before everyone else gets to the Petrol Station.

CUSTOMER: 6 AM??On a Saturday?? That’s way too early for me. And also… I don’t have a van

MUSICIAN: I guess you’ll have to rent one. Do you have any experience on setting up a lighting and sound right?

CUSTOMER: Ummm.. ya know… I’ve been thinking. It’s probably best if YOU get this job done. I’d rather pay someone to come and do this all correctly than go through all the hassle.

MUSICIAN. Smart move, sign this and please get out of the way so I can do my REAL JOB.

THE REALITY IS THIS…

When you pay for an act/ professional musician, especially tailored to your event, you pay not only for the DJ, but you are also paying for:

– Knowledge

– Experience

– Equipment

– Services

– Time

– Punctuality

– Accountability

– Professionalism

– Accuracy

– Sacrifices

– Safety and Security

– Payment of tax obligations

No one should denigrate a professional’s work by judging prices – ESPECIALLY when they don’t know all the elements or costs necessary for the production of such work.

You can’t haggle over a service that you don’t have the skills or knowledge to do yourself. You can’t get a high-quality gourmet dinner party for the same price as a Happy Meal from McDonald’s. And you can’t be mad when skilled people KNOW their worth.

Same across all areas of trade work!
